Artist's Statement
In “Industry Standards,” reclaimed industrial objects are altered to address technophilia, surveillance, and environmental devastation.
The scarred forms of these works allude to the durability of the aging institutions benefiting most from the control of new tools. Many technologies that seem democratic and empowering on their face, such as gig labor apps, social media, and artificial intelligence, can be deconstructed by a critical eye into new expressions of existing status-quo power structures; the powerful benefit most, and the newly empowered perpetuate hierarchies.
By invoking these power structures, I hope to help us consider them anew.
