What is it?
In this permanent public artwork, bulbous front lenses reveal scenes from unusual perspectives: rippling water with dappled sunlight; a waterbird stalking its prey; a lotus flower shakes as a bumblebee gleans its pollen.
These scenes, mostly drawn from the natural world, might seem as though they are from faraway places; but they were all filmed by the artist within 10 miles of the site.
The artwork is formed with 8-inch steel pipe, welded to form periscope-like forms emerging from a concealed concrete pad. Installed in a brick planter, “Periscopes” is designed to enrich a peaceful breezeway. It is sited in “The Stacks”, located in Buzzard Point, DC.
Metal fabrication by Steven R. Jones. Many thanks to Akridge for making this artwork possible.
