What is it?
“Stump/Sandia” shows excerpts from the “Passive Institutional Controls” appendix to the U.S. Department of Energy’s “Compliance Certification Application for the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant,” a nuclear-waste storage facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico that began accepting waste in 1999.
The language included in the artwork has been further garbled through the government’s process of printing, scanning, and OCRing the text.
“Stump/Sandia” incorporates vintage LED displays (DL2416T) with integrated lenses that are no longer manufactured.
The wood of this artwork has been heat-dried for several weeks; the visible runs of sap are no longer liquid. However, the wood may crack, contract, or otherwise change over time.
