What is it?
This wall-mounted artwork shows a black-and-white video—which, surprisingly, turns rainbow-colored as you move around the artwork.
The video shown was filmed at Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, Maine. It depicts a section of craggy granite being filled (and over-filled) by boisterous waves.
How does it work?
The LED matrix inside this artwork is a full-color matrix, with pixels composed of tiny, individual red, green, and blue LEDs. Each of these color components is in a slightly different place. It has a grid of holes through a metal panel in front of the pixels; the holes have shiny edges. As your vantage point changes, the visibility of each color of pixel changes too, so you might see red and green from one position, or blue from another. This leads to a rainbow-like shimmering effect that is difficult to capture in photos or videos.
